Gamble played junior hockey with the Moncton Bruins and Halifax St Marys and with the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey Association. He then played two seasons with the Quebec Aces of the Quebec Senior Hockey League (1949–51). He then spent two seasons with the Canadiens (1952-53 & 1953-54), winning the Stanley Cup in the first season. The Rochester Americans retired Gamble's No. 9 jersey along with Jody Gage. Gage broke Gamble's team scoring records while wearing No. 9.
