James William Cleland (1874-21 October 1914) was a Scottish-born barrister who entered local politics in the Lewisham area. Born in Glasgow, Cleland was educated at Oxford before called to the bar at the Middle Temple in 1899. He sat as a Progressive Party member of the London County Council representing Lewisham from 1901-7. He was Chairman of the county council's Parks and Establishment Committees. He stood down from the county council at the 1907 election, having won a seat in parliament. Article in Who’s Who and Wikipedia [1].
