The vagus nerve is a pair of cranial nerves that run behind the carotid artery and the jugular vein. It controls parasympathetic reactions in most of the organs above the large intestine and some muscles, such as the ones that control the larynx. It plays a role in the control of heart rate, peristalsis, sweating and speech.
