The Thing is a 2011 science fiction horror film directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr., written by Eric Heisserer, and starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton. It is a prequel to the 1982 John Carpenter film of the same name. The events of Matthijs's film take place directly before those of the original film, with the Norwegian party that discovered the alien.
