Walter of Merton was a friend of Robin Hood and Edward of Knighton. He was one of the nobles that pledged to protect the king (not knowing that King Richard was actually an impostor) if the Sheriff tried to kill him while he was in Nottingham. He was murdered by the Sheriff under the ruse of delivering evidence against him.
