Shiba Yusuko was a samurai-ko of the 6th century who fell in love with Asako Matsigoshi, who corresponded. When Matsigoshi's lord was killed, he retired to a monastery as a demonstration of his grief. Yusuko immediately retired to a nunnery. The two of them spent the remaining years of their lives writing letters to each other, but never met again.
