The title of Rivan Warder was given to the semi-democratically elected regents of the Kingdom of Riva. During the interregnum period of the Kingdom of Riva, the Rivan Warder acted as the Head of State of Riva, and sat in the place of the Rivan King during meetings of the the Alorn Council. The position was only semi-democratic because of the semi nepotistic nature of the post; the first Warder and subsequent Warders were elected by council vote when no clear heir was apparent, but the position could be handed down to the son of the last Warder. The name Brand was attached to the post before Kail became Rivan Warder and was not the person's original name. The birth name of the Rivan Warder had to be given up upon the appointment to the post.
