The date rape drug is called GHB or Hydroxybutyric acid. It is a naturally occuring substance in the brain. It is a depressant. Not only is it used in the setting of date rape but it is used at a lower dose to cause euphoria, increased libido, increasaed sociabilty and intoxication. At higher doses it depresses respiration and heart rate, can cause unconsciousness and death. Oddly enough, in my experience in the Emergency Department patients often will come in unconscious and hardly breathing only to wake up completely in a matter of a few seconds. That said, I have had to put a breathing tube down another patients throat.
