The Coldest Place is a short story by Larry Niven in his Known Space universe and with ties into many other stories set in Known Space. It is his first published short story. The "coldest place" in the story is the dark side of the planet Mercury, which at the time the story was written was thought to be tidally locked with the Sun (it was found to rotate in a 2:3 resonance just months before the story was published).
