The Vale of the Water (S."Nan Formensiril") provided a lowland path for travelers on the Great East Road that linked the Bridge of Stonebows to the gaps in the White Downs at Michel Delving and Little Delving. This, the most substantial valley in the Shire, was no more than twenty miles wide at any point; a swift rider could travel the sixty miles from river to downs in a single day.
