Gaius Tero was the tesserarius of the town of Vesunna's detachment of vigiles. Prior to settling there, he had served in a Roman legion stationed on the Rhine. Early one morning, before sunrise, Larcius Afer a vigil who had the watch that night, pounded on Tero's door. When he answered, Afer reported that Clodius Eprius had been killed. Tero asked if he had been murdered to which Afer stolidly repeated killed. A few days later, Titus knocked on Tero's door. He informed him that, after a more thorough search, he had found that Eprius' copy of Sophokles' Aleadai was missing.
