Darren was a high school valedictorian. Five years ago, when he was seventeen, soon after being accepted into Princeton he was inadvertedly killed by Dennis Gammill in a hit and run three blocks from his house. The officer on his case, Leland Stottlemeyer was deeply affected by his death especially when the case remains unsolved. Five years later, the case was solved after the murders of Miles Holling and George Rowe. Dennis Gammill was arrested.
