The 1998 Safari Rally saw Richard Burns take his first WRC win, guaranteed after his team-mate Tommi Mäkinen and Subaru compatriot Colin McRae both retired on Stage 11. With this, Burns was the third British driver to win a WRC event after McRae and Roger Clark.
