Mortalion's name is comprised of the word "mortal", which means "subject to death." This is meant to further contrast its counterpart Infintriar, who is known as the "infinite" or "immortal" Pokémon. Its Japanese name, Mokushiroku, is the Japanese word for "apocalypse", a reference to Mortalion's classification as the Revelation Pokémon.
