Formed under the Metropolis Management Act 1855 previously part of the Hundred of Brixton and County of Surrey: included exclave of Penge. Battersea was in the Wandsworth District Board of Works and Penge in the Lewisham District Board of Works. Battersea Town Hall was on Lavender Hill, and is now the Battersea Arts Centre. 1889 Local Government Act formed the County of London and Battesea transferred to the new county.
