Holo-addiction was a psychological disorder in which a person preferred the fictional world of the holodeck to the real world. This phenomenon was an addiction that functioned as an escape mechanism, symptomatic of deeper psychological problems. According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia (4th ed., vol. 1, p. 344) , holodiction was a contraction of holodeck addiction.
