General Shankar Roychowdhury (born 6 September 1937, Kolkata) is a former Indian soldier, parliamentarian, and defence expert. Commissioned into the 20th Lancers in 1957, General Roychowdhury rose to become the 18th Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army from 22 November 1994 to 30 September 1997. An alumnus of St. Xavier's Collegiate School, Kolkata, he has received the Param Vishisht Seva Medal for distinguished service to the Indian Army and to the nation. He also became member of Rajya Sabha after his retirement.
