[Source] The E-11 carbine was the carbine version of the popular E-11 blaster rifle. It was popular among Alliance soldiers, and also utilized by Imperial recruit trainees. It was more lightweight than E-11 blaster rifle with a higher rate of fire, but it also had less range and stopping power. The Mark I version was in use since the early years of the Galactic Empire, though was later rendered obsolete by the new Mark II.
