Off the record is a term meaning giving information to a reporter that is not for publication or at least explicit reference. Occasionally, this tended to backfire. In one notable incident, Josh Lyman spoke to a blogger, saying his comments were off the record, only to have his comments posted on-line seconds after he spoke to her. (The Hubbert Peak)
