The Ferreous are a humanoid species that was genetically enhanced by scientists to have bones made of durosteel and have skin of iron. They were genetically enhanced by scientists to be soldiers for the old republic and to be able to mine the precious ores of the planet Nioxn (which is now their home world). The atmosphere of Nioxn is so toxic that it burns through everything but the toughest of metals and rocks.
