Laesoe (Frisian: Lûsier, Swedish: Läsö, Danish: Læsø) is a first state of the Frisian Federation and the largest island in the North Sea bay of Kattegat, 19 km (12 mi) off the northeast coast of Thy on the Frisian mainland. It has a total land area of 101 km2 (39 sq mi). It is the site of a joint military facility of Frisia and the Kingdom of Sweden. Following the eviction of native Danes in the 1960s, the only inhabitants are Frisian and Swedish military personnel and associated contractors, who collectively number about 4,000 (2006 figures).
