Artificial Synthetic Life was the term for a mechanism that had artificial sentience. An artificial synthetic life-form usually appeared humanoid. These artificial synthetic lifeforms were by law and custom equal in status to humans. There were no Jim Crow laws for artificial synthetic life-forms because that was illegal.
