Duke Jones was a low rent, low class PI with a rap sheet, employed by Stacey Collins to do the work of digging up dirt on cheating husbands she had previously helped with her matchmaking services. He in turn called on the services of Greta Morgan to be his 'honey trap', getting the husbands into bed, or at least compromising positions in locations where he was already lying in wait to take pictures. Once he learns of Stacey's removal from the picture (and the world), Duke folds his tent and scuttles off into the night - alone, since Greta has separate plans of her own.
