A combatant calls out a color. When they strike their opponent on that color, it does damage. In order to maximize the damage dealt, the combatant must call out a color that would put them at the most risk. For example, if a combatant calls out white, but is not wearing any white, their attack will do no damage. However, if they called out black and were wearing all black, they would deal massive amounts of damage.
