Administered, copyrighted, and published by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 101, the Life Safety Code, is the registered trademark of an American consensus standard which, like many NFPA documents, is systematically revised on a three year cycle. The "Authority having jurisdiction" inspects for compliance with these minimum standards.
