The John Chard Medal (Afrikaans: John Chard-medalje) was instituted with effect from 6 April 1952 to replace the Efficiency Medal and the Air Efficiency Award which was previously awarded to members of the Citizen Force between 1939 and 1952. This bronze medal was awarded to members of the Citizen Force, irrespective of rank, who had completed twelve years' long and efficient service. The qualifying service did not need necessarily be continuous. The medal is of bronze and the designation and significance is the same as that of the John Chard Decoration.
