He was born in Detmold, and served in the military between 1974 and 1976. He obtained his doctorate in law in 1991. He is married and has one daughter. Steinmeier continued on his social democratic roots, but he went to introduce more conservative monetary policies, in order to help the country's economic problems. These were effective, yet they've met with general protests.
