Because Carcosa is described as lying upon the shores of Lake Hali (or possibly Demhe), places offered as a real world location of Carcosa, such as the Gobi and Rub al-Khali, will be described as possessing a nearby dried-out lake bed, to the extent that it has become a common trope. In addition, it could also appear on an alien world no longer habitable by humankind. As some descriptions of the lakes state they are filled with cloud rather than water, it may be possible to journey down to the bottom of the lake, perhaps finding, as has been suggested, a further iteration of Carcosa on the lake bed...
