Sentai (戦隊 Sentai) is a Japanese term for a unit, squadron or platoon in the Japanese military which was most prominently used during World War II. Most notable among the Sentai forces was the Japanese Imperial Navy and Air Force. Fittingly, the first Super Sentai, Himitsu Sentai Gorenger, was a superhero team that worked as a fictional military operative. However, the term nowadays in Super Sentai is more of a remnant of its origins, as more recent Sentai teams are not operated by or consist of military forces, but act as a civilian defense force of sorts against the current show's threat.
