The monastery was established as the first in the Duchy of Carinthia about 1024 by a certain Count Ozi, probably affiliated with the Otakar dynasty, margraves of Styria from 1056, and father of Patriarch Poppo of Aquileia. From the Otakars the office of a vogt passed to the House of Babenberg and finally fell to the Habsburgs. The monastery site is one of the venues of the annual music festival "Carinthian Summer".
