Bomblet dispensers are cluster weapons which employ small-sized submunitions in lieu of the traditional warheads used by other arms of the same class, such as bombs. When the dispensers are triggered, the submunitions contained within are released over the target area. Their impact zone is determined by the circumstances in which the weapons are activated: a flurry of bombs at low altitude and speed will tend to strike a wide area, while a release at high speed will cause them to land in a straight, narrow line. Their particular method of operation makes the dispensers a kind of "high-risk/high-reward" weapon, as a bombing run in the former way may expose the attacking aircraft to ground fire.
