The 1987 Winston 500 was a Winston Cup Series (now Nextel Cup) event held at Talladega Superspeedway on May 3, 1987. Davey Allison dominated the race, leading 101 of the 178 laps in route to his first career victory, holding off Terry Labonte before the race was called ten laps early for darkness. The race was marred by a horrific crash in which Bobby Allison's Buick cut a tire, spun, and lifted off the track and into the catch fence, injuring several fans and taking out a large section of fence. The race was red flagged for several hours while the fence was repaired. Points leader Dale Earnhardt finished 4th and held a 220-point championship lead on Bill Elliott (22nd). Stats
