Some thought that the Mk III (Cobra) was a masterpiece of engineering, Others, unnecessarily complicated. The Mk III had six engines instead of three. The thought was that several engines could be knocked out before the Mk III was rendered worthless, also it was thought that smaller engines were more efficient. As with the Mark II, kinetic weapons were used. A marked return to the Mk I chassis (due to post-war cutbacks) allowed Mk IIIs to be produced rather cheaply. Unfortunately the final product was deemed a failure by many, as its engine system was cluttered with thrust transfer vents, and it boasted a nightmarish computerized engine control system. The fighter wasn’t worth half the price of a Mk I on its best day.
