The 2016 Atlantic Hurricane Season was an unusually inactive season due in part to a powerful El Nino that brought enhanced dry air to the Caribbean and Gulf basins. A total of 8 tropical cyclones formed between July 22 and November 4, seven of which became named tropical storms (including four hurricanes, one of which attained major hurricane status). The deadliest and, by far, most powerful was Hurricane Colin which peaked at high-end CAT IV status (150 MPH; 934 MB) over the open Atlantic waters and battered the island of Bermuda with hurricane conditions, US$1.4 billion (2016) in damages and an overall total of 17 fatalities.
