Colonel of Marines was an honorific rank in the Manticoran military. Appointment to this rank was a way for the Monarch of Manticore to show special approval of an officer still too junior for promotion to flag rank. It did not actually give the officer the command authority of a colonel in the Royal Manticoran Marine Corps, but he or she did receive a colonel's full salary in addition to any regular pay. (HH4)
