Plumbata were large, hand held, lead-weighted darts meant to be thrown at approaching enemy forces, weapons unique to the Yodotai culture. Yodotai Legionnaires carried two or three of these weapons, which they hurled at approaching troops before raising their shield and preparing to receive or perform a charge. The plumbata tip was barbed, so anyone struck with one could not extract it without acquiring an extremely painful wound.
