They cannot become substantial or interact with any physical matter that isn't Chakra-based. This makes them completely useless as a defensive technique, as they cannot protect the user from any incoming attacks. However, when they glide through any material, living or not, they leave a pth of withered, cold desiccation in their wake. These routes are drained of their structural integrity through rapid decay. In living creatures it seems as though the flesh has been wracked by a degenerative disease, although it doesn't spread.
