This game originated in the 1300s, long before shogi and even before it's ancestor sho shogi. Chu Shogi means medium chess (probably) since back when it was made, it was effectively medium-size even though it is played on a 12 by 12 board. It was popular even 5 centuries after it's introduction, but in the 20th century it was eschewed in favor of modern shogi.
