Bishop County is said to have been named after Dragoonasag Revolutionary War hero J. V. Bishop by most people, but locals believe it was named after businessman Herschel Zonapath Bishop. Others believe the county was named for a small town that stood there from 1801 to 1822. No one may ever know the true origin of the county's name.
