The Whigs maintained a majority in the House of Commons from 1840-1850, and 1855 to 1860. Claiborne, Johnson, and Roman all were Governor-Generals. In the 1860s, two factions arose; a liberal faction led by Thomas Overton Moore, and a conservative one led by Murphy. The liberal faction joined the Democratic Party, while the conservatives formed the Conservative Party, dissolving the Whig Party.
