In Close Call, Nick's extraordinary speed in saving Schanke from a suspect's bullet draws his suspicion, and Schanke decides to investigate his partner's past. His notes prompt a joke about vampires from a uniformed officer; and Schanke is sufficiently impressed by the possibility to turn his eyes in that direction. He provides himself with a stack of reading material so that he can learn more about vampires.
