The South African Women's Auxiliary Army Service was created in 1940 to allow white south african women to participate in the war effort by filling non-combat positions to free up men eligible for combat ones. It was originaly decided to have officers of the WAAS wear red stripes as rank insignias but in december of 1941, they were given the right to wear normal South African insignias.
