Ariobarzanes I, also known as Philoromaios was the king of Cappadocia from 95 BC to ca. 63 BC-62 BC. Ariobarzanes I was a nobleman in Cappadocia who's origins were from Persian descent. Ariobarzanes I was originally put on the throne by citizens that voted in Cappadocia when the Roman Senate rejected claims of Ariarathes IX of Cappadocia and was supported by a Roman consul by the name of Lucius Cornelius Sulla. He was in control of a kingdom sometimes and sometimes not in control and was a Roman protectorate. He was later removed three separate times by King Mithridates before not only securing but actually increasing his lands under general Pompey in the Third Mithridatic War where he eventually abdicated (stepped down and passed his rule to his heir).
