The Pōhutukawa (Latin name Metrosideros excelsia) is an evergreen tree native to New Zealand. Found throughout New Zealand, it is particularly common in the North Island and is one of seven Metrosideros species endemic to New Zealand. It flowers bright red, usually during Christmas during Earth's southern hemisphere summer. In 2372, Captain Noah Wrightson had pōhutukawa, amongst other plants, growing in the private Captain's arboretum. (Star Trek: The Cantabrian Expeditions)
