A gambit was a risky strategy used in games such as chess. According to Deanna Troi, chess involved intuition, not merely "ploys and gambits". (TNG: "Conundrum" ) The term could also be used to describe a strategy used by a con artist to sucker people. In 2376, after realizing he and Tom Paris had been tricked by Dala into providing for orphans, he called this lie "the oldest gambit in the book." (VOY: "Live Fast and Prosper")
