In the tradition of Bugs Bunny and other Looney Tunes characters, the Animaniacs characters would sometimes pop up in historical periods in which they had no business being. This made perfect sense for cartoony characters like Yakko, Wakko and Dot and Slappy Squirrel, who could manipulate time and space like their cartoon brethren - perhaps slightly less sense for characters like Pinky and the Brain, who seemed to exist in a slightly more realistic universe.
