Rotwang creates a mechanical man or robot called by various names. He places the appearance of Maria on the robot to manipulate the workers who labor below Metropolis. In the book, there is a story of a mysterious stranger that moved into Rotwang's house long ago and then disappeared. Possibly suggesting Rotwang is far older than is possible in a normal human lifespan. The film script and novel were both written by Thea Von Harbou. Rotwang is killed by falling off the roof of the cathedral in a fight with Freder Fredersen at the end of the film.
