Lieutenant Kije was the title of a 20th century Russian satire, later adapted to a movie, and most notably, as a classical music suite by composer Sergei Prokofiev. The story of the original novella involves the creation of a fictional person, due to a grammatical error in an official report. Kije is believed to be a real person, though he is never actually seen by anyone, and he undergoes many turns of fortune before being "killed" in battle and honored posthumously.
