The Covenant Civil War or the Great Schism was the war between the elites, most grunts, most hunters, some unknown number of jackals, and a small number of brutes (aided by the UNSC) against those loyal to the prophets. The war ended when the Covenant Loyalists were defeated by the High Prophet of Truth being assassinated by Thel Vadam and prevented the Halo rings from activating.
