The Catalans are an ethnic group or nation native from the former Principality of Catalonia, now divided between Spain and France, as well as other adjacent and nearby Mediterranean areas including Andorra, Valencia and the Balearic Islands, usually jointly known as the Catalan Countries. Most are Catalan language speakers, and today virtually all of them also speak the official language of their respective states. Valencia and Andorra are independent.
